Setting the stage

So, what’s this all about? The International 505 is a One-Design high-performance two-person monohull planing sailing dinghy, with spinnaker, utilising a trapeze for the crew.

Despite being designed waaay back in 1953, it’s one of the fastest and all-around best racing dinghies in the world. And they are all over the world; it’s also one of the most popular.

The 505 World championship is a big deal, each year attracting around 100 boats from all over the world. And this year the Worlds are in – ta da – San Francisco, hosted by the prestigious St Francis Yacht Club, right on the waterfront next to the Golden Gate Bridge. In addition to being beautiful San Francisco Bay is also cold and windy, which will make for an exciting regatta.

I’ll post more about the boats, the history, the regatta, and how I came to be competing in the coming days, please stay tuned. It’s going to be great!
